Opinion 85-09

Question

Is it proper for a part-time judge to: 1) serve as chair of a fund raising committee of a civic organization so long as the judge does not personally solicit funds; 2) sell tickets for fund raising activities; 3) solicit a “patronage” contribution in connection with the sale of tickets to an event for which the contributor is buying special recognition such as having their name printed in a program or is allowed to attend a special party for contributors only?

Answer

It is not proper under CJC Canon 5(B)(2) for a judge to engage, either directly or indirectly, in any fund raising activities.

NOTE: Effective June 23, 1995, the Supreme Court amended the Code of Judicial Conduct. In addition to reviewing the ethics advisory opinions, the following should be noted:
